ignorance is bliss

it is easy to ignore the issues that do not directly affect us. it is easy to comply with the traditional gender roles enforced upon us by society. i call that blissful ignorance. it is baffling to see just how much of society lives in blissful ignorance. ignorance to the pain non-binary individuals experience everytime someone tells them that who they are doesn’t exist. ignorance of what it means to be non-binary in a world where gender is so deeply rooted in everything that we do to the point that people are so determined to classify you as either a man or woman just so that they know how to treat you. ignorance to what it feels like to not be comfortable in your own body not just because of its blemishes and imperfections but because what you see in the mirror doesn’t align with the perception of yourself that YOU have constructed rather than the one society has forced upon you. ignorance to the constant anxiety caused by being forced to choose between gendered restrooms while simultaneously dealing with the constant stares no matter which one you choose because you are actively defying the gender binary just by existing. ignorance is bliss until it isn't.
“there are only two genders, you are either a man or a woman.” hear my pain.
“they/them is plural.” i exist.
“identity: the act of being who or what a person or thing is.” who am i?
